Erva Tostao is a creeper that grows in many tropical countries and hot climate. It's is typical of Brazil and is found in abundance along the roadside and in the forests of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Erva Tostao is native of India, particularly the hot parts of the country, which has a secular history of use by the indigenous tribes and Ayurvedic medicine.

In this grass have been found some totally new elements, including some flavonoids, steroids and alkaloids. Some of the new alkaloids have shown immunomodulating effects. In particular, in a study of alkaloid fraction localized in the root showed a strong reduction of elevation in the levels of cortisol in conditions of stress (cortisol is an inflammatory agent produced by the body during an immune reaction). Simultaneously, the alkaloids have been shown to prevent the fall in the performance of the immune system, or have expressed an adattogena of immunomodulation, suggesting a possible utility of this plant in preventing the depletion of the adrenal glands.
